All Flesh is like Grass
In 2018-20 life expectancy in Northern Ireland was 78.7 years for males and 82.4 years for females. For those of us who have reached retirement age, these are stark figures.
It does not, however, take government statistics to remind us of our mortality. As Moses wrote:
'The years of our life are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty; yet their span is but toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away’ (Psalm 90:10).
Time seems to pass more rapidly the older we get. The endless summers of school holidays are contrasted with the fleeting days, weeks and months experienced by most adults. Why this happens is unclear: ‘The phenomenon of time passing as we age is but one of the brain’s unknown, and possibly unknowable, mysteries’.
The Bible does not shy away from discussing the brevity of life…
